About Dr. Curtis Barnes, DMD

Dr. Curtis Barnes was born on February 20, 1960, in a small town in Northeastern Pennsylvania, where he was raised on a farm. Growing up in a rural environment instilled in him a strong work ethic and a hands-on approach to life. During his middle and high school years, he was actively involved in sports and music, developing a well-rounded foundation that continues to influence his professional and personal life.

In 1982, Dr. Barnes earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Ithaca College, majoring in Chemistry with a minor in German. He went on to complete a Master’s Degree in Chemistry at the University of Florida, followed by an M.B.A. from the New York University Stern School of Business. Before entering dental school, he built a diverse professional background working in chemical research, banking, marketing, and pharmaceutical sales, experiences that contributed to his analytical and patient-centered approach to dentistry.

Dr. Barnes received his Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) degree from the University of Florida College of Dentistry in 1994. Following graduation, he began his dental career with the Broward County Health Department, where he dedicated 15 years of service to public health dentistry. During this time, he was deeply involved in providing dental care to children and adults living with HIV and AIDS, eventually serving as Assistant Director of HIV Dental Services.

In 2009, Dr. Barnes was recruited by Nova Southeastern University to oversee its HIV Dental Services program at the Oakland Park, Florida, location. In this role, he not only provided direct patient care and managed clinic operations but also played a vital role in educating and mentoring hundreds of dental students in the treatment and management of patients affected by HIV and AIDS.
